This is a fun one.  Every year Dog Fancy Magazine (you flip through it at the vet checking out the super cute dogs) holds a Dogtown USA Best Dog Town in America contest.  They ask readers of the magazine to send in nominations and editors select a winner based on the presence of dog-friendly activities, dog-friendly restaurants and businesses, dog parks, medical specialists, and pro-dog legislation.

We didn’t come in first this year – that honor went to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a 12,000 person/3,000 dog town that looks like a great place to visit.  However, we did win the Regional Runner up for the NW Region of the U.S.  Our 154,000 Seattle dogs should get their ears scratched in celebration.

Sally and Bill.

Bill and I (that’s my dog in the photo, he’s a Hungarian Kuvasz) agree that Seattle is a great city for dogs. A few highlights  (also mentioned in the article):

  • Seattle has 14 off leash dog parks. One of the newest in Magnolia has a “chuck it” game zone and dog drinking fountain.
  • Seattle has more than 20 dog friendly hotels and many dog friendly coffee shops, bars, and even work places.
  • The Seattle Animal Shelter reports more than 86% of rescued or surrendered dogs find new homes.  Pretty good odds.
  • A little alumni pride here – the mascot at the University of Washington is a four year old Alaskan Malamute named Dubs.

Thanks to all the dog-oriented businesses, their owners and employees who make Seattle a great dog town. Whether it’s training, a vet, special food, a bath and comb, we have a great array of businesses to meet every dog niche. Thanks, also, to the employers who make space for the dogs in their employees lives.

Now, to the Cat Fancy competition.

Yes more and more cities are becoming more and more dog friendly. That is good for not only the dogs but it creates more jobs for dog trainers that we train.

Thanks for the article.

I hope my workplace catches up with the idea and maybe allow at least a day in the week to bring in the canine friend. It will immensely help to distress at the work place.

Such a nice article. It’s good to read that there are more and more dog friendly places. Now it’s the human’s job to train them well, so we have a lot of friendly and at ease dogs. When we do that the dog friendly places will stay and more dog friendly places will rise…

Dogs give you everything and don´t ask for anything back. They give all their love and the society must value this. Goverments and cities must be also a good place for them.

So great! I haven’t been to Seattle in 20 years but this seems like something the people and local government would support.
We have 3 off leash parks in Nashville. And some nearby cities have as many as 6! Thanks!

Even is Seattle only had Marymoor, and Magnuson Off Leash parks it would be amazing, but it has so many more smaller neighborhood ones as well. I have met so many great people at the small local off leash parks. You see someone everyday for a couple weeks, your dogs play, and you end up talking. What a wonderful way to build community!

This is a very interesting web site about man’s best friend, as here in the UK the opposite seems to be taking place the beaches are all banning dogs, most parks allow dogs.

I think the biggest cause of the problem is irresponsible owners letting the dogs foul and not cleaning up behind them as we have lots of bins for dog waste. Also another major problem here is illegal dogs, Pit bulls and various other breeds are banned due to a high level of attacks. The problem however has not gone away as owners just say they have cross breeds and the local authorities have little cash to go around doing DNA tests on dogs so nothing changes.
It seems over here we all pay the price for the few irresponsible owners, things must change.

Regards

Michael

I can agree with you and Bill :-) that Seattle is really great city for dogs and its owners.

All those dog parks, with so many dog friendly places, for sure “push” Seattle to be one of dog friendly cities.

I didn’t know that more than 86% of rescued dogs find new homes. So, yeah that is for sure great odds.

It would be good if other cities in USA, but also in other parts of the world, follow Seattle…

Regards,
MB
